Fast forward 18 months and he is the most perfect dog in the world. He runs off lead with great recall, loves to meet other dogs and goes with me everywhere without a bark or a fuss!
As Nicola Marsh from our adopters’ groups says…
“What you put into a dog, you get out.”
Pet owners who have ever adopted a dog know this: giving a second chance to a living creature is a truly beautiful thing! Many people choose to adopt a dog through a shelter or rescue animal organization.
This Interview is dedicated to the lovely Masha, a stray dog from abroad that found her amazing home in England.
‘’ Untill we saw Masha we hadn't found a dog that we felt a connection to.’’
We talked with Masha’s owner – Becky and we asked her few questions about her experience with adopting a dog from abroad.
WG TEAM: HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO ADOPT A DOG FROM ABROAD AND WHAT WAS YOUR MAIN MOTIVATION?
BECKY: We had been looking to adopt a dog for a long time, but untill we saw Masha we hadn't found a dog that we felt a connection to. Seeing Masha, we fell in love with her straightaway. We had a few worries about adopting from abroad but we knew in our hearts that we had found our baby. We looked into the protocol for bringing her over to England and realised their wasn't much difference to adopting a dog from England other than we couldn't meet her. But we received videos and updates of her and by the time the day came for her to travel we felt like we had already met her anyway.
WG TEAM: WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH THE ADOPTION?
BECKY: The adoption experience was very easy and very reassuring. All of our questions was answered from what food she liked too what bed she would need. Even after mashas arrival I was still able to get any advice or help I needed, the contact didn't stop just because she was home with us.
WG TEAM: WHAT CAN AN ADOPTER EXPECT IN THE FIRST WEEK WITH THEIR NEW PET? SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE.
BECKY: We found that for the first few days she needed to recover from her journey so we left her to recover we kept things quiet and just gave her reassurance. It has taken her 12 weeks to fully settle and for us to really get to know her true personality. My advice would be don't rush your dog let them adjust in their own time, don't expect too much from your dog, they have alot to learn and they are coming into a home they have never experienced and they are meeting people they have never met. Look at things from your dogs view point. Patience and time will give you rewards that you couldn't dream of.
WG TEAM: YOUR MESSAGE TO EVERYONE THAT DOUBTS IF THEY SHOULD ADOPT FROM ABROAD.
From my own experience I would recommend you follow your heart, these dogs from abroad give you a love return that is so special.
Adopting an animal from abroad means providing a new life for them and a new chance for the shelter to rescue other strays that are waiting on their happy endings.
For the new owners, it is a very rewarding and heartwarming experience to know that you have changed the world for a homeless animal and provided them with a new life of love and companionship. And, we are forever grateful to our heroes!
Learn MoreScar's rescue dog's 'freedom ride' from euthanasia went viral for all of the right reasons.
The 11-year-old Husky was going to be euthanized at the local vet station after her owner left her to be euthanized because her new boyfriend could not live with dogs. Also, because apparently the husky was already too old.
The vet called the WG Team and told the husky's story, he told them that the husky was completely healthy, however her owner asked specifically for him to euthanize her.
Of course, we did not let this happen, and we took Scar under our care.
Three days later, the husky found her forever home with Keti and she named her Scar.
The previous owner never even called back to ask about Scar, supposingly she find out she was not euthanized.
However, after two years with her new owner Keti, Scar is still going strong, playing, jumping and loving life.
It's a happy ending that everybody loves!
Learn MoreThe happily ever after of Cybil and Koval, the stray dog found in the dumpster together with a mom and seven other puppies.
Imagine coming to this world hungry and cold, only with your mother’s skiny body to warm you up.
But, then your life turns around and some girl comes to pick you up. Suddenly, everything is new. Where is she taking you?
You come to a place with lots of other dogs, lots of food and many warm cuddles. Oh, it’s ok. This is the Wagging Tails Shelter every stray dog talks about.
After two months in the shelter and regular check-ups at the vet, Cybil and Koval finally found their forever home and were ready to travel to England with their new parents that were waiting impatiently to give these two lovelies all their love. Is there anything better?!
Kelsey, the owner says that they have lost their dog in December who passed very suddenly and very unexpectedly. They were going to wait a while before getting another because Kelsey was not coping well. However, her kids were not coping well either but in a very different kind of way. So she and her husband decided it would be best to get another for the kids sake. They searched for weeks in the UK and were denied by dozens of rescues because they are American and because they have young kids. She learned she could search abroad so she broadened her search.
- “ Initially I had started to give up hope with adopting, but after weeks of searching and dozens of denials, I finally came across Wagging Tails and they did not disappoint. At first I was a little hesitant and skeptical because I know there are tons of scams out there. I talked to one of the rescuers, expressing my concerns and she was so kind and patient and explained everything thoroughly. This family are amazing human beings and work extremely hard. They made the process as smooth and painless as possible. They’re patient and help calm any anxieties along the way, from the waiting for travel to the travel itself. They love to check in even after the pet arrives to you to see how both you and your new family member are settling in!“.
We asked Kelsey about her experience during the first week with her new pet and this is her answer:
“ I’ve gotten 2 dogs from them now. One was four and half months old when we got her late March and the other a year old just a week ago. Puppies tend to be a bit more accepting, but it took Cybil a couple months before she really let her personality show. Koval took to me and my husband right away, but was very nervous around my kids. He’s already warmed up to them and fits in great. The most important thing with any rescue is to give them time and space. Let them come to you when they’re ready. Once you earn that trust, the bond is everything and truly amazing“.
Finally, Kelsey’s message to everyone that doubts if they should adopt from aborad is: Don’t!
“ I know it can seem expensive, or stressful, or scary, but it’s totally worth it. These rescues work so hard. They see things that most of us will never see in our life times. The abuse and neglect, the blatant murder of the animals. Yet they never give up hope. They work hard and show so much compassion, even without having laws to protect these animals, they work tirelessly to help save them. These countries need it more than anything and the fact that they do all they can to save them is truly amazing. They see things I can’t even stomach the thought of and yet they push on. I’ve had many rescues in my life and this was by far the best experience I’ve had!“
They even made them their own drive-through, so they can take food from the kitchen whenever they want.
We just love happy endings!
